The Pahoa community formed the Pahoa Booster Club to support all Pahoa regional school athletics.

The immediate goal is to support the Pahoa High and Intermediate School’s quest to restore its football program. The capital expenditure startup costs are estimated to be $80,000 and the annual operational costs are estimated to be $15,000.

Ormat, or Puna Geothermal Venture, KapohoKine Adventures and Island Naturals are among the companies that pledged support for helping sustain the football program after its initial startup.

Pahoa Booster Club has the support of the administration and athletic department of Pahoa High and Intermediate School, as well as the Hawaii Academy of Arts and Sciences Public Charter School.

Pahoa Booster Club also has the support of the lower Puna representatives — Sen. Russell Ruderman, of District 2, and Rep. Faye Hanohano, of District 4, and also Puna Councilman Greggor Ilagan.

The group requested startup funds from the Senate Ways and Means Committee and the House Finance Committee. Hanohano said she will include the football program initiative in her capital improvement project list.

Anyone who would like to pledge support for the football program startup or join the Pahoa Booster Club is invited to the next meeting slated 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at Luquin’s Mexican Restaurant.
