Soprano Amy Horst and pianist Dorothy Williams are Nothing But Treble.
They’ll present their unique interpretations of classics, folk songs, and standard favorites for “One Charming Night,” Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the First United Protestant Church in Hilo, just above Hilo Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente’s Hilo clinic.
“One Charming Night” is a sampling of the duo’s favorite music. Offerings range from Purcell’s aria for soprano and continuo, “One Charming Night (Secrecy’s Song),” to Schubert’s gracious “The Shepherd on the Rock” featuring Elan Kobel on clarinet. Nothing But Treble brings to life songs and arias of Mozart, Puccini, Purcell, Schubert, and local singer/conductor/composer Pedro Ka‘awaloa.
Nothing But Treble also performs folk and standard repertoire during “One Charming Night.” English and Irish folk tunes arranged by Roger Quilter and American folk music arranged and created by John Jacob Niles and Luigi Zaninelli join a set of perennial Nothing But Treble standard favorites.
Hilo’s Horst is known locally for her one-woman shows: “Show Off: Meet Me At the Moon”; “Bach to Broadway”; and “Friendship.” She’s also known as a music teacher and choral conductor. Minneapolis-based pianist Dorothy Williams combines church organ and piano duties with collaborative and solo piano work around the Twin Cities. The two met just two-and-a-half years ago in Minneapolis, and have performed there regularly since that time. This is their second Hilo concert together.
Horst described “One Charming Night” as “inspired by music that sparkled even as it felt earthy.”
“We collected a set of songs and arias that engage and play with the questions, thoughts, and feelings that arise with the night,” she explained.
Added Williams: “This is a great program — very evocative of its title.”
Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors, available at Basically Books in Hilo, Keaau Natural Foods, and at the door.
