Love: Feel it, sing it! The Puna Men’s Chorus will celebrate with the community in honor of the most loving holiday of the year — Valentine’s Day.
With 2014 just beginning, here’s an opportunity to affirm appreciation for life, friends and ohana at three “Love and Light” concerts.
The first show will be 7-8:30 p.m. today at the First United Protestant Church, 1350 Waianuenue Ave., just mauka of Hilo Medical Center.
On Saturday, the second concert will be 7-8:30 p.m. at the Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art as a benefit for the new museum, also known as the East Hawaii Cultural Center, located at 141 Kalakaua St. in downtown Hilo.
The Sunday, Feb. 16, concert will be at Kalani Oceanside Retreat, on the Kalapana-Kapoho Beach Road between the 17 and 18 mile markers. The Kalani concert will be the finale performance of weekend “Illuminato” festivities celebrating exuberant art, love and light.

“Love and Light” is a choral concert featuring the virtuoso vigor and four-part harmonies of men singing heart-stirring songs inspired by The Beatles, ABBA, The Tokens, Billy Joel, Sha Na Na, Kahauanu Lake Trio, Dixie Chicks, Cody Pueo Pata, Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole and others.
Guest composer-vocalists for the concerts are James Mack and Jon Arterton. Arterton is director of Massachusetts’s 150-member Outer Cape Chorale and founder of The Flirtations.
Director of “Love and Light” is Hilo’s Devon Lerma, who has a degree in choral leadership. Accompaniment for the concerts is being provided by Sandi Alstrand on piano and Glen Burris on ukulele.
Kuane Cariaga, Andy Cruzio and Joy Aloha, who instruct weekly hula, ukulele and art classes at Kalani Oceanside Retreat, are also contributors to the show.
Admission at the door is $15 per adult, $12 per student or senior. Cash and credit cards are accepted. Contributions support music outreach and education.
