Vulcans hoops returns home

The University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s basketball team will be celebrating Coaches vs. Cancer today when the Vulcans host Cal Baptist at 7:30 p.m. at UHH Gym.

To raise awareness, UHH’s coaching staff will wearing sneakers throughout the game.

The Lancers (16-1) enter the game in first place in the Pacific West Conference at 10-1, while the Vulcans (3-14) are in last at 0-11.

The 5 p.m. women’s game features a pair of teams battling to get into the PacWest tournament. Six teams are bunched together in the Nos. 4-8 spots, including the Lancers (8-9, 6-5) and Vulcans (6-9. 5-6).

UHH alumni game Saturday

First-year coach Kallen Miyataki will make his debut Saturday when the University of Hawaii baseball team holds its alumni game at 2 p.m. at Wong Stadium.

Donations will be taken at the front gate.

The Vulcans return 15 players from a team that finished 15-35 last year and was eighth in the 10-team Pacific West Conference.

Merit honor for UHH soccer

The 2013 University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s soccer team was presented a Team Ethics Award of Merit by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The Silver certificate is awarded annually to collegiate soccer teams receiving no red and maximum of five cars during seasonal play. The Vulcans received three yellow cards during the season.

First-year coach Lance Thompson guided the Vulcans to a 10-4-2 record and a fourth place tie in the PacWest with a 7-4-1 record.

Dizzy Dean sign-ups on tap

Hawaii Dizzy Dean Youth baseball and softball leagues will be holding player and team registration beginning Saturday for boys and girls ages 5-19.

State champions of each age division in the league will be granted automatic berths to the Dizzy Dean World Series

Softball benefit for Keaau High

There will be a men’s slow-pitch softball tournament on March 1 at Keaau High School to benefit the Cougars’ softball team.
