The Hawaii County Fire Department has opened an investigation into a blaze destroyed a $90,000 home Wednesday in Pahoa.

Firefighters responded to an address on Mauna Kea Road at 2:18 p.m., to find the single-story houses’s wooden post and pier structure in flames, with heavier damage noted to the rear of the structure. The building was set about 6 feet above ground.

Firefighters opted to avoid fighting the fire from the building’s interior, as they feared possible collapse, according to a written report.

The fire was reported extinguished at 4:20 p.m., and the scene was turned over to the Prevention Bureau for investigation.
