During the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2, Hawaii Island police arrested 29 motorists for DUI. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and South Hilo, 11 each; Puna 3; Hamakua, 2; Ka‘u and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 130 DUI arrests compared to 96 during the same period last year, an increase of 35.4 percent.
There have been 120 major accidents so far this year compared to 112 during the same period last year, an increase of 7.1 percent.
So far this year, there have been three official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to seven during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.1 percent.
To date, none of the fatalities have been linked to impaired driving.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
