Hawaii Prep enjoyed a laugher. Kamehameha survived a heart-stopper.
The girls soccer teams played vastly different matches Thursday at Oahu’s Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex in advancing to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II semifinals.
Bri Vallente scored twice as Ka Makani overwhelmed Leilehua 8-0 in what coach Steveo Perry called a “22 win.”
“All 22 players played and contributed,” Perry said after HPA reached its third straight state semifinal. “Everyone was focused, and we took care of business.”
Erin Evans, Brittani Boora, Nanea Tavares, Jordan Grainger, Emma Taylor and Haley Dow also scored for Ka Makani (11-2-1), the five-time defending Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion and a two-time state runner-up. Morgan Monahan and Taimane Kamaka shard in the shut out against the Mules (6-8) of the Oahu Interscholastic Association.
Perry said the tensest moment for his team came when it boarded the team bus and started getting shot-for-shot updates of how HPA’s boys team was faring in a shootout back on the Big Island against Honokaa. Ka Makani ultimately prevailed, setting off at least one celebration on Oahu.
“There’s video of the girls celebrating that I think has already gone viral,” Perry said.
Looking to get back to the final, HPA takes on Pac-Five (6-7-1) at 1 p.m. today. The Wolfpack, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up, beat Kauai 3-1 in their quarterfinal.
The BIIF runner-up Warriors (10-4-1) reached the semifinals when JC Kerr scored four minutes into the second overtime, securing a 1-0 win against Kalaheo of the OIA.
Kamehameha coach Sonya Ah Chong said she was sorting through her roster to find five players for the would-be shootout, only to look up and see Kerr score from about 20 yards.
Anuhea Leite-AhYo shutout the Mustangs (6-7).
Kamehameha draws top-seeded Mid-Pacific (5-6-2) at 3 p.m. today. The Owls, the ILH champion and three-time state champ, shut out Kapaa 3-0.
Honokaa 5, Seabury Hall 2: Allie Shiraki scored twice to lift the Dragons in a Division II consolation match.
Kauilani Loo, Tia Agdeppa and Sina Odell also scored for Honokaa (6-8-1), the BIIF’s third-place team. The Dragons will play Radford (7-8) of the OIA at 3 p.m. Saturday in the seventh-place match.
Aiea 2, Konawaena 0: Raisa Strom-Okimoto scored in the first half and Tiara Ono found the back of the net in the second half as Na Alii (12-4) of the OIA blanked the Wildcats in the Division I quarterfinals.
In a consolation match at 3 p.m. today, BIIF champion Konawaena (10-2-2) faces top-seeded Iolani (10-1-2). The ILH champ was upset 1-0 by Kapolei in the quarterfinals.
Castle 3, Hilo 0: Angela Johnson, Destnee Hanaike and Kayla Silva-Gage netted goals for the Knights (10-5) in a consolation match.
The BIIF runner-up Vikings’ season is over at 10-4-1.
