The third quarter got away from Waiakea, leading to another first-round loss at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I basketball tournament in Honolulu.
Mililani raced to a 14-2 run after halftime and defeated the Warriors 70-62 on Wednesday night at Radford High’s gym.
The game was tied 33-33 entering the third, but Elijah Butler made three baskets, including a 3-pointer, and Noel Bueno hit two jumpers to help the Trojans (15-2), the Oahu Interscholastic Association’s No. 5 team, forge ahead 47-35 with 3:40 left in the third quarter.
Like the first two quarters, the fourth was also even, with each team scoring 23 points.
Waiakea (10-4), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation runner-up, got the lead down to four with under three minutes to go in the game on Kyle Kua-Ramirez’s jumper. But the Warriors made only two of their last eight shots from the field.
Lucas St. George scored 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and had two blocks to lead Waiakea, which will play Moanalua (12-7) of the OIA at 3 p.m. today in consolation action at Radford. Na Menehune lost 59-54 to Maryknoll.
St. George, a 6-foot-3 senior, was 5 of 10 from the floor and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line. Kua-Ramirez and Dillon Rellez added 11 points each and Maikai Gahan had 10 points for the Warriors, who shot 41.4 percent, including 7 of 20 from 3-point range, and committed 21 turnovers. Jeffery Tomas grabbed seven rebounds.
Rellez was 3 of 6 on 3-pointers.
Waiakea was making its first appearance at states since back-to-back trips in 2009 and ‘10, but it suffered a familiar fate. The Warriors have lost their last eight state openers, falling to 14-33 all-time in 18 appearances.
Bueno scored 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting to pace the Trojans, while Butler, a 6-4 senior, posted a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
Mililani (15-2) plays No. 2 seed and OIA champion Farrington (13-1) in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. today.
The Trojans shot 49.1 percent from the field but were just 12 of 26 from the free-throw line.
Campbell 46, Leilehua 35: Gilbert Dayanan scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Sabers advanced to the quarterfinals.
Campbell (12-2), the OIA runner-up, will play BIIF champion Konawaena (11-2) at 5 p.m. today at McKinley High in Honolulu.
