During the week of Feb. 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Ten of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.
During the week of Feb. 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Ten of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; South Hilo, 7; Puna and South Kohala, 4 each; and Ka‘u, 2.
So far this year, there have been 195 DUI arrests compared to 176 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.8 percent.
There have been 231 major accidents so far this year compared to 205 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.7 percent.
So far this year, there have been three official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to eight fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 62.5 percent.
To date, one fatality has been linked to impaired driving, a combination of drugs and alcohol, according to police.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
