The aina will be the classroom for a weeklong High School Agricultural Internship Program from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 17-21, in Honokaa. Applications are due Friday.

Based at The Kohala Center’s Ka Hua ‘Aina training farm in Honokaa, interns will gain hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and learn about island food systems. They will visit and work on farms along the Hamakua Coast and earn a stipend for their work. The program also includes field trips to processing facilities and wholesalers, and the opportunity to meet island and state agricultural leaders.

More information and application instructions are available at http://www.kohalacenter.org/farmertraining/interns.html, or by contacting Derrick Kiyabu at (808) 220-2312 or dkiyabu@kohalacenter.org.

The program is sponsored by The Kohala Center and Kamehameha Schools’ ‘Aina Ulu Program.

The Kohala Center is an independent, community-based center for research, education, and conservation. The center was established in direct response to the request of island residents to create greater educational and employment opportunities by enhancing Hawaii’s spectacular natural and cultural landscapes.
