The state Department of Public Safety said calls and emails are continuing to come in from the public about a phone scam involving people impersonating sheriff deputies.
It is a nationwide scam that started affecting Hawaii residents at the beginning of February. The impersonator is calling random numbers and telling people there is a warrant for their arrest because he or she did not show up for jury duty or court.
The impersonator is telling people they will be arrested unless they pay a fee by phone to have the warrant cleared.
DPS said sheriffs do not and will not call people about warrants having to do with jury duty or solicit the purchase of anything.
Anyone who receives a call matching this scam is asked to alert the sheriff’s division by calling (808) 586-1352.
