During the week of Feb. 24-March 2, Hawaii Island police arrested 29 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
During the week of Feb. 24-March 2, Hawaii Island police arrested 29 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 14; South Hilo, 8, South Kohala, 4; Puna, 2; and North Hilo, 1.
So far this year, there have been 224 DUI arrests compared to 205 during the same period last year, an increase of 9.3 percent.
There have been 276 major accidents so far this year compared to 235 during the same period last year, an increase of 17.4 percent.
So far this year, there have been three official traffic fatalities compared to nine during the same period last year, a decrease of 66.7 percent.
To date, one of those fatalities have been linked to a driver under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol, police said.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
