Tickets are on sale now for the Pacific Tsunami Museum’s 12th-annual story festival and dinner, “Waiakea Town Revisited,” scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at the Sangha Hall in downtown Hilo.
Tickets are on sale now for the Pacific Tsunami Museum’s 12th-annual story festival and dinner, “Waiakea Town Revisited,” scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at the Sangha Hall in downtown Hilo.
Doors open at 4:30 p.m.
A special feature of this year’s fest will be reproductions of Waiakea Town landmarks and other entities integral to the area prior to the 1960 tsunami.
These include the Waiakea Settlement, Waiakea Pirates, Ikeda Shoyu and Hilo Macaroni, Nagahisa Store, Waiakea Elementary and Intermediate Schools, Takayama Vegetable Store, the tsunami clock and others. Compelling survivor stories will be shared by Gloria Kobayashi and Terence Yoshioka. There also will be a presentation of never-before-displayed aerial photos taken immediately after the 1946 tsunami.
Civil Defense Administrator Darryl Oliveira will deliver a safety message, and tsunami poster contest winners will be announced.
The event is part of Tsunami Awareness Month in Hawaii. Tickets are $40, available at the museum and at all KTA Super Stores. For more information, call the museum at 935-0926.
The Sangha Hall is at 424 Kilauea Ave., next to Starbuck’s and the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin.
The museum is a nonprofit entity dedicated to promoting tsunami awareness and education through a blend of science, history and personal accounts.
