Francis X. Hezel, SJ — renowned Jesuit author, educator, consultant and expert on Micronesian history — will visit the Big Island from March 16-21 as a guest of the Pacific Islander Student Center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Francis X. Hezel, SJ — renowned Jesuit author, educator, consultant and expert on Micronesian history — will visit the Big Island from March 16-21 as a guest of the Pacific Islander Student Center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
He will give two free public lectures and discussions Wednesday entitled “Making Sense of Micronesia: The Logic of Pacific Island Cultures” (1:30-3 p.m.) and “Women’s Roles in Micronesia: Then &Now” (5-6 p.m.). Both lectures will occur in UH-H Campus Center Room 301.
Hezel published a half dozen books and well more than 60 articles about Micronesia, and his influence on Micronesian studies was described as formidable.
He is frequently consulted within and beyond Micronesia by government officials, educators, researchers and development specialists.
He received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Guam and Fordham University, his alma mater. Most recently, Hezel has been conducting research with Micronesians now living in the United States.
He is available to give other free lectures and consulting for educators, service providers and health care providers.
