The Veterans of Foreign Wars announced Sara DuVoisin placed first on the Big Island and was awarded a scholarship in the 2013-14 Voice of Democracy program.

DuVoisin, sponsored by VFW Post 3830 in Pahoa, wrote her winning essay based on this year’s theme, “Why I’m Optimistic About Our Nation’s Future.”

The VFW established the Voice of Democracy program in 1947 to provide students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves in regard to democratic ideas and principles.

DuVoisin is a senior at Kamehameha Schools and plans to attend the University of San Diego, majoring in business with a focus on entrepreneurship. She is the daughter of Rick DuVoisin.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is a nonprofit veterans’ service organization comprised of combat veterans and eligible military service members from the active, Guard and Reserve forces.

VFW Post 3830 in Pahoa has been dedicated to veterans’ service, legislative advocacy and military and community service programs for more than 30 years.
