Richardson Ocean Park will close March 27 for fire ant control.

Richardson Ocean Park will close March 27 for fire ant control.

The closure will begin at 2:30 p.m. so the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation can apply baiting treatments to combat the fire ant infestation at the Hilo park.

The park will reopen at 7 a.m. March 28.

Parks and Recreation previously applied the nontoxic baited vials at the park in mid-January.

The fire ant population decreased by more than 50 percent then, the department said.
