Firefighters rescued eight stranded hikers in Waipio Valley on Sunday.

According to a written Fire Department statement, the eight were reported overdue. Due to weather conditions, they were unable to pass over swollen rivers and streams in the secluded Hamakua valley.

Seven units, including a county helicopter, responded to the 5:26 a.m. alarm with the first unit arriving at 6:27 a.m.

The hikers, who reportedly stayed overnight in the valley, were found along the Hi‘ilawe waterfall trail and extricated safely.

None were injured and all declined medical treatment, according to the statement.
