During the week of March 17-23, 2014, Hawaii Island police arrested 32 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; South Hilo, 11; Puna and South Kohala, 4 each.
So far this year, there have been 312 DUI arrests compared to 304 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.6 percent.
There have been 381 major accidents so far this year compared to 308 during the same period last year, an increase of 23.7 percent.
So far this year, there have been three official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 11 during the same period last year, a decrease of 72.7 percent.
To date, two fatalities have been linked to impaired driving, one to drugs and another to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
