WAIMEA (AP) — Hawaii’s largest ranch plans to talk to its neighbors about developing renewable energy and a small electrical grid for their area.
Parker Ranch will present the preliminary findings of a study on the issue to the Waimea Community Association town meeting next week Thursday.
The Big Island ranch said it aims to reduce the cost of electricity for the ranch and the Waimea and Kohala communities.
The study examines the potential of developing new, predominantly renewable energy in the area. It reviews the possibility of installing a microgrid that would enable the communities to use this energy.
Parker Ranch said the region is rich with strong winds, consistent solar radiation and other natural resources.
The ranch intends to gather contact information of neighbors and businesses interested in the energy options.
