Nine artists from various cultural backgrounds and experiences, all currently active and working in Japan or Hawaii, are coming together for an international art exhibition.
This show, slated April 17-May 3, takes place at the Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
Many of these artists have participated in international exhibitions at other points in their careers, but never together. This exhibition gives the public a chance to experience the work of this culturally diverse group in one collaborative show.
Their collective work encompasses a broad spectrum of materials — paint, paper, clay, fiber and objects. Yet, each artist has a unique and distinct vision expressed through the use of diverse materials and techniques.
The 2-D artists — Susumu Sakaguchi, Shingo Honda, Ken Charon, Ryosaku Miyasaka and Ritsuko Sato — transform their creative imagination on to canvas; sculptors Stephen Freedman, Tsuneo Taniuchi and Kenji Misawa use a mix of media to create their work. Freedman uses clay, while Taniuchi and Misawa manipulate paper to create their pieces.
Sonja Henrixson combines several mediums into one overlaid composition in her imaginary images of structured spaces.
An opening reception is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at VAC’s Hale Ho‘omana. The exhibition will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily, except Sundays.
A special workshop on “Paper Sculpture” will be offered by exhibition artist Tsuneo Taniuchi from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19.
Learn how to work with paper to create sculptural forms.
The fee for this three-hour workshop is $20 and includes supplies. Students need bring only basic scissors, a glue stick, transparent tape and a stapler.
