During the week of March 31-April 6, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
During the week of March 31-April 6, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
Two of those drivers were younger than the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, 8; South Hilo, 7; Kona, 6; and South Kohala, 4.
So far this year, there have been 352 DUI arrests compared to 362 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.8 percent.
There have been 431 major accidents so far this year compared to 356 during the same period last year, an increase of 21.1 percent.
So far this year, there have been four official traffic fatalities compared to 11 during the same period last year, a decrease of 63.6 percent.
To date, two of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — one to drugs, the other, a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
