The 25th annual Big Island Newbery Quiz Bowl is slated for 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Kamehameha-Hawaii campus in Keaau.
The public is invited.
This islandwide reading-incentive program promotes the reading of the American Library Association’s Newbery-winning books by students in grades 4-7. This year’s bowl will be the largest ever, with 19 teams representing public and private schools and home schools around the Island of Hawaii.
“The Newbery Quiz Bowl is very effective in motivating upper-elementary and intermediate students to read these examples of excellent and challenging literature for their grade levels. It also provides a day of academic competition and fun for these young readers in celebration of reading,” said spokeswoman Paula Kamiya of Waikoloa, who serves as the island’s lead coordinator.
Kamiya paid tribute to event founder and longtime co-coordinator Julia Tao of Hilo, a now-retired school librarian who is turning over the reins of the event to Kamiya and others.
“We are sad to announce the stepping down of our founder and co-coordinator Julia Tao. We are looking for a replacement east side coordinator,” said Kamiya, who will continue as lead coordinator.
