An overturned tanker truck caused the closure of Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 190) for about six-and-a-half hours Thursday afternoon and evening near the 15-mile marker in the Waikoloa area.
Six Fire Department units, including a hazardous materials team, were sent to the scene in response to the 3:05 p.m. alarm. The truck was found on its left side blocking both lanes of the highway with multiple chemical fluid leaks that had to be cleaned up.
Forcible entry was made into the truck’s container, and about 20 55-gallon drums and 12 30-gallon drums were removed to prevent any further spillage.
No one was injured, and police re-routed traffic from the highway between Kaiminani Drive and Waikoloa Road.
Police reported the highway re-opened at 9:34 p.m.
