Cal State Northridge’s William Colantono drove in the winning run off Quintin Torres-Costa in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night, and the University of Hawaii lost its eighth straight baseball game, 2-1 in Northridge, Calif.
Torres-Costa (2-1), a Waiakea graduate, walked Dylan Alexander to open the ninth. Pinch runner Nico Garbella moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Colantono’s double to right center.
In two innings in relief of Scott Kuzminsky, Torres-Costa struck out two batters and walked three.
Jordan Richartz single and scored in the third for UH (14-29, 2-9 Big West), but starting pitcher Jeremy Keel was dominant for the Matadors (15-23, 4-7), striking out 10.
Keel worked 8 2/3 innings and gave up only three hits before giving way to Anthony Cortez (2-0), who stranded a runner at third in the ninth.
In 6 2/3 innings, Kuzminsky scattered six hits and struck out a batter without issuing a walk.
Softball
A two-out error by UH allowed the go-ahead run to score in the seventh inning, and Cal Poly came back for a 6-4 victory in Honolulu.
In her 16th complete game of the season, four of the runs charged to Loie Kesterson (10-10) were unearned.
Kristina Akiona was 2 for 3 with an RBI single for UH (19-20, 4-6).
The Mustangs (23-16, 5-5) tied the game in the sixth on Lauren Moreno’s run-scoring single to center. Moreno, who also collected a doubled, walked with the bases loaded in the seventh.
Sierra Hyland (20-7) went the distance and overcame eight walks and struck out six in the victory.
Sand volleyball
No. 3 UH eased to three victories in its final dual matches of the regular season in Huntington, Calif., positioning itself for the program’s first trip to the national championships.
The Rainbow Warriors (18-3) swept 14 of 15 sets, beating Irvine College and Cal Poly 5-0, and defending national champion Long Beach State 4-1.
