The Alzheimer’s Association will present lectures in May at the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 1055 Kinoole St. in Hilo.
On May 3, 10 and 17, the public is invited to a 1 p.m. series on “What Is Dementia,” “Legal Affairs in Dementia” and “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia.” There will be a 3 p.m. series of movies including “Diminished Capacity,” “A Moment to Remember” and “A Beautiful Life.” A three-part series at 5 p.m., called Living With Alzheimer’s, is for anyone who is forgetful and their family.
On May 3, the schedule will be “What Is Dementia,” a workshop which reviews dementia, the symptoms, warning signs, misconceptions and potential treatments, at 1 p.m. It includes short videos of persons with the disease, family members of persons with dementia and various professionals. The movie “Diminished Capacity” will be shown at 3 p.m. This is a 2008 movie about a Chicago journalist suffering from memory loss who takes leave from his job and returns to his rural hometown, where he bonds with his Alzheimer’s-impaired uncle Rollie and his old flame. At 5 p.m., the Alzheimer’s Association begins the first of its three-part series for anyone who is forgetful along with their family members.
On Saturday, May 10, the topics will be “Legal Aspects in Dementia,” covering information on advance directives, various legal documents and planning strategies. The movie, “A Moment to Remember,” will follow. It is a 2004 Korean love story (with English subtitles) about a young couple’s enduring love, which is tested when 27 year old Sun-Jin is diagnosed with a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease. “Living with Alzheimer’s, Part II,” will end the day.
On Saturday, May 17, the topic will be “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia.” This workshop covers information on possible causes and types of behaviors that may arise during the course of dementia as well as potential interventions. The movie “A Beautiful Life” is a 2011 Chinese romance film (with English subtitles) about a police officer who develops dementia and a woman who learns to provide care for him. “Living with Alzheimer’s, Part III,” will conclude the program.
