The Pacific West Conference softball twinbill was played at Laie, Oahu. The Vulcans defeated the host Seasiders 5-2 in the opener before BYUH pulled out a 1-0 win in Game 2.
UHH (20-18 overall, 12-11 PacWest) entered Friday’s action ranked 10th in the West Region. The top eight teams in the region at the end of the regular season will advance to regional play. The Vulcans play at Hawaii Pacific University today and Chaminade on Sunday to wrap up their regular season.
In Friday’s opener, Colleen Aubry went 3 for 4, with a double and two RBIs, to lead the Vulcans. Rebecca Lee was the only other UHH batter to pair hits. Teammate Melanie Morelos added a double.
Whitney Gustafson and Rebecca Mawson each had two hits for the Seasiders.
UHH’s Ashley Nelson (12-9) went the distance to earn the win. She scattered eight hits and allowed two runs while striking out two and not walking a batter. Talor Alvarez (2-14) also pitched all seven innings and took the loss. She allowed nine hits and five runs to go along with two walks.
In Game 2, BYUH’s Gabby Hawkins outdueled UHH’s Hannah Peterson for the 1-0 victory. Hawkins (7-10) pitched a five-hit shutout with four strikesouts and two walks. Peterson (7-7) limited the hosts to four hits to go along with five strikeouts and three walks.
Mawson had a double and drove in the Seasiders’ lone run. Kristina Victa and Brittany Huff each had two hits for UHH.
