HONOLULU (AP) — The University of Hawaii’s flagship Manoa campus is included in a list of 55 colleges and universities under investigation for possible violations over handling of sex abuse complaints.
The U.S. Education Department released the names Thursday, two days after a White House task force promised greater government transparency on sexual assault in higher education.
University spokeswoman Diane Chang says the investigation is not related to a specific incident. She characterizes it as a compliance audit.
Title IX prohibits gender discrimination at schools that receive federal funds. It regulates institutions’ handling of sexual violence and increasingly is being used by victims who say their school failed to protect them.
The agency previously would confirm such an investigation when asked, but students and others were often unaware of them.
More needed for licenses
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii residents will now have to present new documents to obtain a driver’s license in the state.
Starting Thursday, individuals needed to present two documents showing proof of principle residence in Hawaii.
The new requirements are the same as those in effect for state IDs.
Officials will accept copies or original documents with the applicant’s name and address as proof of principle resident.
Documents that will be accepted include current valid Hawaii driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations or titles, and current voter registration cards.
Also accepted are mail from a government or medical entity not more than two months old, utility bills not more than two months old and federal Hawaii income tax returns from the previous year.
Top principal
picked for state
HONOLULU (AP) — The state’s top principal has led Salt Lake Elementary since 2002.
The Hawaii Elementary and Middle School Administrators Association named Duwayne Abe as the state’s top principal for 2014.
The state Department of Education says Abe was appointed vice principal of the school in 1988 and became principal in 2002.
Abe will travel to Washington, D.C., in October for an event honoring distinguished principals nationwide.
Other nominees included Rochelle Mahoe of Noelani Elementary, Stacie Kunihisa of Kanoelani Elementary, Pua McElhaney of Enchanted Lake Elementary, Joe Yamamoto of Maunaloa Elementary and Sherry Gonsalves of Kilauea Elementary.
