There are two Larry Manliguis scholarships available, one for Hilo High seniors and another for all Big Island senior student-athletes.

The $300 scholarships will be awarded May 26 before the championship game of an alumni basketball tournament at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The deadline to apply is May 22, and applicants must write a one-page essay with a short biography about what sports has done for them and how they will give back through athletics; have a grade point average of at least 2.0; and a submit a second-quarter report card.

The alumni basketball tournament starts May 24-25 with play at Hilo Armory and Andrews and Shipman gymnasiums, and the championship round is May 26 at Hilo Civic. Defending champion Iolani is in the field.

Basketball camp

set for Honokaa

The Big Island All-Stars Honokaa Basketball Camp will be held May 30-June 1 at Honokaa Parks and Recreation Gym.

The camp is for children who just completed kindergarten through eighth grade.

Registration begins May 30 (7:30 a.m., kindergarten-third grade or 8 and younger; noon, grades 4-8 or 9 and older).

The session for the younger group runs 8:30 a.m.-noon, while the older group goes 1-4:30 p.m.

The $50 fee — payable to Big Island All-Stars with “Honokaa Basketball Camp” in memo — and application is due by May. 21, and they can be mailed to Daphne Honma, P. O. Box 355, Paauilo, HI 96776.

Walk-ins will be accepted, but each session is limited to the first 90 applicants.

Applications can be picked up at Honokaa Gym from Anna Muranaka or at Honokaa High and Intermediate School (ask for Daphne Honma).

Shotgun course

for teens on tap

The Waiakea Recreation Center will offer an NRA shotgun shooting course for ages 13-18.

The free program will be held 8 a.m.-2 p.m. June 9-14, and registration is open to the first 10 participants.
