Hilo youth participants in The Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island (BGCBI) Revolutionary Youth Market recently won third place in the state in the Hogan Entrepreneurs/American Saving Bank Business Plan Competition.
RYM is a pilot project of the (BGCBI). It is a youth-operated, farmers-market style marketplace.
“Our belief is that it is a matter of justice that everyone has access to healthy produce, no matter how much money they have,” said Hilo Club Director JoYi Rhyss. “In the spirit of abundance, RYM’s pricing philosophy is ‘take what you need, give what you can.’”
RYM youth wrote and submitted this concept as a business plan to the Hogan Entrepreneurs/American Savings Bank Nonprofit Business Plan Competition and won $4,000 by placing third out of 40 contenders.
“Produce harvested from the BGCBI garden or gleaned by RYM youth from supportive farmers and gardeners is available at the Revolutionary Youth Market held at the BGCBI Hilo Clubhouse,” Rhyss said.
