During the week of April 28-May 4, 2014, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 8; Kona, 7; Puna and South Kohala, 4 each.
So far this year, there have been 445 DUI arrests compared to 454 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2 percent.
There have been 560 major accidents so far this year compared to 469 during the same period last year, an increase of 19.4 percent.
So far this year, there have been five official traffic fatalities compared to 12 during the same period last year, a decrease of 58.3 percent.
To date, three of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — one to drugs and two to a combination of drugs and alsohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
