Athlete of Month
Kamehameha-Hawaii outside hitter Evan Enriques has been named the Big Island Athlete of the Month for April.
Enriques, a 6-foot-2 senior, led the private-school Warriors to a 13-0 record and the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I volleyball title as well as a berth in the HHSAA championships.
In a state quarterfinal match last week against Kamehameha-Kapalama, Enriques had a match-high 28 kills and 20 digs to lead Kamehameha-Hawaii to a 24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 27-25 victory at Keaau. The big win lifted the Warriors into the state D-I’s Final Four.
Enriques will play volleyball and study at Stanford University next year.
The Big Island athlete of the month program is sponsored by Don’s Grill, under owner Don Hoota. The athlete of the month as well as athlete and sportsperson of the year programs were founded by the late Jack Matsui.
Members of the selection committee are Hugh Clark, Ramon Goya, Stan Costales and chairman Bill O’Rear.

HIGA golf
winners named
Ka Ohana, with a net of -14, took the first place in the recently held six-player team golf tournament, sponsored by Hawaii Island Golf Association/Hilo Muni Golf Club.
The winning team members were Wayne Yamauchi, Agnes Yamauchi, Gary Cooper, David Sing, Chris Paulachak.
Tied for second place were two teams: Hawaiian Men and Hustlers 2, with a net of -10. The fourth-place winning team was Ah Fook (-8), and Thursday Hui (-4) took fifth place.
Chris Igawa, with a 64 gross, took the overall low gross honor.
In memorial of the late HIGA board member, Akira Watanabe, five close-to-the-pin awards were presented to Tommy Hirae (hole 2), Chris Igawa (hole 8), Richard Miyamoto (holes 10 and 13), and Jinsu Iida (hole 16). Before his death in late last year, Watanabe had provided prizes to all close-to-the-pin winners at HIGA tournaments.
Individuals who placed in the top five low net scores were: men’s A-Flight – Wayne Yamauchi (61), Andrew Higa (66), Richard Miyamoto and Mike Kekaulua (tied 67), and Robin Arema and Shawn Downey (tied 68).
Men’s B-Flight – Rickie Nakamura (64), Bruce Papp (67), and Paul Koshi, Greg Kama, Glen Ohashi and Kyle Fujimoto (tied 69).
Women flight – Kim Murasaki (65), Agnes Yamauchi (68) and Yun Ok Hansen (69).
Cash prizes were awarded. Fifteen teams competed in the tournament held April 27 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

deadline May 16
Hilo Little League is extending its registration deadline through May 16 for additional players to complete rosters in the Jr., Sr., and Big League Divisions of baseball, ages 12-18.
Interested players can contact team managers and league coordinators Alan Filoteo at 987-8002, or Bo Saiki at 937-3005 for signup. League play will start May 20.

Big Island I.D.
soccer camps set
The Big Island I.D. Soccer Camp will be held June 23-26 at Hawaii Preparatory Academy.
The camp, featuring guest coaches from Southern California’s top club programs, is divided into two sessions:
— Youth Camp, Under 7-U14, runs from 8 a.m. to noon.
— College I.D. Camp, U15-U18, runs from 3 to 6 p.m.
Cost is $165 per camper.
The guest coaches include:
— Jeff Illingworth, former Director of Coaching at CV Manchester United FC, now coaching with the San Diego Surf, and representing Pro I.D. Soccer Camps. He has coached in Southern California for 33 years. Pro I.D. Soccer Camps send the USA’s top talent to Manchester City’s Youth Academy in England.
— Andy Hargreaves, who has 25 years of coaching youth soccer in Southern California with top clubs like Nomad, Surf, and DMVC Sharks. He is currently the head coach of nationally renown Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, and a staff coach at RSF Attack. Hargreaves’ programs have produced hundreds of collegiate and professional players over the years.
— Vince La Porta, who has coached youth soccer across the U.S. for 15 years while playing semi-pro and professional soccer in California and Massachusetts. He currently serves as Director of Coaching at Kona Crush Soccer Academy and as a staff coach for Hawaii State ODP.
