Hilo triathlon

slated for July 13

Hilo’s first official triathlon will start at 7 a.m. July 13 at James Kealoha Beach Park.

The Olympic-distance race consists of a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40K-bike ride and a 10K run and is limited to the first 500 participants.

Registration is $150 through May 31 and $175 until June 30.

Coach’s workshop

at Paauilo Gym

The Department of Parks and Recreation and the Positive Coaching Alliance is offering a Developing Triple Impact Competitors workshop May 21 at the Paauilo Gym Annex.

Registration begins at 5:30, and the workshop follows from 6-8 p.m and is free to the first 30 participants.

Larry Manliguis

stipends available

There are two Larry Manliguis scholarships available, one for Hilo High seniors and another for all Big Island senior student-athletes.

The $300 scholarships will be awarded May 26 before the championship game of an alumni basketball tournament at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The deadline to apply is May 22, and applicants must write a one-page essay with a short biography about what sports has done for them and how they will give back through athletics; have a grade point average of at least 2.0; and a submit a second-quarter report card.

The alumni basketball tournament starts May 24-25 with play at Hilo Armory and Andrews and Shipman gyms, and the championship round is May 26 at Hilo Civic. Defending champion Iolani is in the field.

Basketball camp

set for Honokaa

The Big Island All-Stars Honokaa Basketball Camp will be held May 30-June 1 at Honokaa Parks and Recreation Gym.

The camp is for children who just completed kindergarten through eighth grade.

Registration begins May 30 (7:30 a.m., kindergarten-third grade or 8 and younger; noon, grades 4-8 or 9 and older).

The session for the younger group runs 8:30 a.m.-noon, while the older group goes 1-4:30 p.m.

The $50 fee — payable to Big Island All-Stars with “Honokaa Basketball Camp” in memo — and application is due by May. 21, and they can be mailed to Daphne Honma, P. O. Box 355, Paauilo, HI 96776.

Walk-ins will be accepted, but each session is limited to the first 90 applicants.

Applications can be picked up at Honokaa Gym from Anna Muranaka or at Honokaa High and Intermediate School (ask for Daphne Honma).

Hoops Camp

The 2014 Hawaii Island Hoops College-Prep Basketball Camp will be held June 16-20 at the Konawaena High School Gym.

The camp, under the direction of Andy Smith, offers skill development for youngsters and introduces them to college-style workouts and training.

Smith, a former UH-Hilo standout, will be joined on the teaching staff by college coaches from the junior college, NAIA and NCAA levels.

The camp fee is $350 and includes a Nike reversible jersey and shorts, college coaching and instruction, all meals, daily seminars on academic requirements, financial aid and athletic recruitment, plus a beach trip.

Basketball league

at Andrews Gym

The Biddy Basketball League will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 22 at Andrews Gym.

A tournament will be held Aug. 9 at Andrews, and league play begins Aug. 11 at Andrews for ages 5-6 and 7-8.

Entry fee is $50 per teams and space is limited to 12 teams per division.

• Andrews is looking for boys and girls between the ages of 7-14 to participate in a youth volleyball league.

Practices will start at 3:30 p.m. May 15, and all kekei wanting to play will be accepted.
