The Volcano Art Center Gallery will present “A Walk Through the Park,” an exhibit of new work by Joe Laceby, from May 24-July 20.
The public is invited to an opening reception with the artist from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at the gallery.
Lacey is an artist living and working on the Hamakua Coast, who has worked in sculpture, metal fabrication and photography.
Using these and other skills, he is able to meld the soft graininess found in old-style Cyanotype photography with the polished hardness of steel framing.
The Cyanotype printing process was developed in 1842 by Sir John Herschel.
It combines ferric salts to create a light-sensitive coating.
When the undeveloped salts are washed away, a blue and white image remains.
For Laceby, this image now becomes the foundation for the application of various pigments and dyes, as well as directly applied minerals.
The final work is encased in a hand-built polished steel frame with a protective plexiglass cover.
“My personal attraction to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the amazing diversity found within its boundaries. What you will see represented in this show is my way of presenting the variety I see,” Laceby said. “For most visitors, the highlight of the Park experience is Kilauea.
“For me, it’s witnessing firsthand the surviving and enduring uniqueness surrounding Kilauea.
“This is my visual journey around the park, conveyed through Cyanotypes.”
The gallery, next to the park’s Kilauea Visitor Center, is open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and has represented the artists of Hawaii since 1974.
Park entrance fees might apply.
