Educator, researcher and historian Sandra Bonura will be the presenter for Kona Historical Society’s May Hanohano ‘O Kona presentation from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center at 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway in Kailua-Kona.
It was Bonura who located and facilitated the return to Hawaii of the long-inaccessible 1969 reel-to-reel taped collections of Lydia Ka‘onohiponiponiokalani Aholo, the hanai daughter of Queen Lili‘uokalani. The oral history tapes purportedly provided the foundation for the popular book “The Betrayal of Liliuokalani.”
Recognizing its value to family and history, Bonura wrote about Aholo’s unique story entitled “Lydia K. Aholo-Her Story: Recovering the Lost Voice” in the latest edition of the Hawaiian Journal of History.
The presentation will include the voice of a remarkable woman who lived for more than a century and knew Queen Liliuokalani “as the only mother (she) had.”
Bonura is a professor and a researcher/historian of 19th-20th century education of Hawaiian children. She is currently writing the biography of Ida May Pope, who was the first principal of Kamehameha School for Girls. She had the post for more than 20 years and was an educational partner with Queen Lili‘uokalani.
