The state Board of Land and Natural Resources approved a 10-year lease extension Friday for the Food Basket.
The Big Island’s food bank operates out of a warehouse on state-owned land in the Kanoelehua Industrial Area in Hilo. It acquired the lease in June 2011 after outgrowing its previous location.
In its decision, BLNR also said that the lease amount must be 10 percent of the location’s value.
That will be determined through an appraisal. Currently, rent is set at $17,100 a year. The lease was set to expire in 2016. The extension allows the Food Basket to remain at the location until 2026.
The organization had sought a new long-term lease at a nominal rate available for nonprofit groups. BLNR denied that request in December.
The Food Basket qualified for the extension because it made renovations exceeding $170,000.
