Honokaa tops the news with the Honokaa Jazz Band opening the Big Island Jazz Festival at the Shops at Mauna Lani; the Hotel Honokaa Club presentation by Hugh Montgomery of “BIG BANG Theory, Honokaa or BUST,” and to top it off, the Honokaa First Friday June Event.
A select group of the members from the Honokaa Jazz Band will be opening the third annual Big Island Jazz Festival June 6-7. On June 6, they will perform at 4 p.m. at the Shops at Mauna Lani; June 7, they will be at the Mauna Kea Luau Grounds at 5 p.m. The members include Elizabeth Sekona, Jackie Lacanlale, Cjay Carvalho, Christian Potter, Jadelyn Alvarez, Halana Birch, Clayton Soros, Payton Cawagas, Nick Rohfeld, Ron Jon Pira, Hildang Adona, Kamea Phenecie, Camelia Witt, Keith Nerida and Leila Gomera. They will play a wide variety of music including the music of New Orleans, funk, jump jazz, R&B and Latin jazz.

And look at what is coming for Honokaa School students this summer. Honokaa High and Intermediate School is having a Summer Meal Program from June 9 to July 18 at the Honokaa School Cafeteria. Breakfast is from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and Lunch is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Anyone age 18 or under is welcome to participate. There is no cost or registry. Just come and eat.

Honokaa High &Intermediate School is happy to announce a summer program for all incoming freshmen. The Summer Bridge Program will focus on preparing students with skills to be successful in high school. This program will provide an opportunity for students to review, refine and build skills necessary for academic success in the areas of math, organizational skills and language arts while becoming acclimated with the campus and surrounding areas. Students will receive a one-half credit for participation in this program. The program will run from Monday, June 9, through Friday, June 27, from 8:15 to 11:45 a.m. daily, except for June 11, which is Kamehameha Day.
Transportation from Waimea will be provided. The school will be a summer feed site, so all students will be able to have breakfast and lunch at no cost. Students will rotate through three different classes and have a 20-minute break during the three-hour session. An Ahu Moku Island Council informational meeting is Monday, June 2, at 5 p.m. at Spencer Park Pavilion. All residents of North and South Kohala are invited. The Waimea Community Association, WCA, monthly town meeting is this Thursday, June 5, starting at 5:15 p.m. at the Waimea School Cafeteria. The agenda will include a presentation by Steve Durst, director of the International Lunar Observatory Association (ILOA), based here in Waimea. The talk focuses on efforts to advance human knowledge of the cosmos through observation from our moon within the decade.
