Firefighters are in the third day of fighting a brush fire that has blackened more than 1,000 acres near Ka‘alu‘alu Bay in Ka‘u.
The fire, fueled by strong northwesterly winds, required bulldozers to cut fire breaks and two county helicopters providing bucket drops.
At last report, no developed property had been damaged, but tanker trucks were stationed on South Point Road to protect nearby structures.
