During the week of May 26-June 1, police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 8; Kona, 4; Puna, 3; South Kohala, 2; and Ka‘u, 1.
So far this year, there have been 524 DUI arrests compared to 554 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.4 percent.
There have been 665 major accidents so far this year compared to 593 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.1 percent.
So far this year, there have been seven official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 16 during the same period last year, a decrease of 56.3 percent.
To date, four of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — two to drugs and two to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
