HONOLULU (AP) — Visitors to Halawa Correctional Facility will be able to see and talk to inmates, but not have any physical contact.
The state Department of Public Safety said preventing physical contact during visits is aimed at stopping contraband items such as drugs and tattoo kits from entering the facility.
The department Tuesday unveiled the upgraded visitation rooms, which were remodeled by staff and inmate workers to include the partitions.
Warden Nolan Espinda said the security upgrade will mean visits can start earlier in the day and with less strain on staff. There have been problems with too many guards calling in sick, forcing the cancellation of weekend visits at various correctional facilities statewide.
The department said the project’s cost was about $100,000.
