The Annual Volcano Pottery Sale keeps getting bigger and better. Now in its sixth year, the two-day event on Friday and Saturday will feature 15 diverse ceramic artists from the east side of the Island of Hawaii. The sale will be held at the Niaulani Campus of the Volcano Art Center in Volcano Village.
Hours for the sale will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Functional pottery and ceramic sculpture ranging from low-fired raku and pit-fired wares, to high-fired porcelain and wood-fired stoneware will be shown. Each of the 15 potters has his own unique style and techniques, yet all share a common interest in working with clay as a way of life. This year, for the first time, there will be wheel throwing demonstrations by various potters on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Returning from previous sales will be Birgitta Frazier, Tim Freeman, Ron Hanatani, Chiu Leong and Emily Herb all from Volcano Village, Clayton Amemiya, Shannon Hickey and Carol Yamashita from the Hilo area, T.R. Andrews of Kurtistown, Tim Johnson and Shelby Smith from Puna and Gordon Motta of Ahualoa. Joining the group for the first time will be Lisa Louise Adams and Erik Wold from Volcano and Margaret Lynch from Puna. This will be a great opportunity to see a wide variety of ceramic works, all in one location and to meet and talk story with the artists. The cool rainforest surroundings of Volcano Village create a serene environment in which to enjoy the finely handcrafted wares. Also on both Friday and Saturday, samples of fine Volcano grown teas will be available for tasting courtesy of Tea Hawaii, and sushi will be available for purchase from Volcano Hanabi on Saturday.
There is plenty of free parking at the Niaulani Campus, located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village, and more information is available by calling 985-8530, and at http://ryhpottery.com/volcano_pottery_sale.
