Marie Piilani Cadena, 91, of Hilo died June 6 at home. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired occupational therapist for the state of Texas, former librarian at Fort Bliss Special Services in Texas, member and past president for the Kiwanis in Horizon City, Texas, and a 1941 graduate of Kamehameha Schools. Friends may call 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Prayer service at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. Scattering of her ashes at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Punaluu beach. Donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society. Richard “Dick”Cohen, 95, died March 30. Born in San Francisco, he was a World War II Marine veteran, photographer, abstract expressionist artist, San Francisco police officer, sailor and Zen master. He lived on Hawaii Island. Survived by wife, Janine; children, Lesley and Matthew; five grandchildren.
Cecelia Pacheco Chang, 102, died June 4 in Longview, Wash. Born in Pepeekeo, she grew up on a sugar cane plantation, graduated from Hilo High School, spent two years at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu and also was a seamstress. She requested no memorial service. In lieu of flowers or other expressions of condolence, the family requests donations be made to one’s local Community Hospice or Adventist Community Service Center. Survived by sons, Muncel Chang of Portola, Calif., and Hal Theron Chang of Temple City, Calif.; daughter, Loye Nesbit of Kelso, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.
