Waiakea pitcher Kodi Medeiros and Hawaii Prep track star Emma Taylor have been named the Big Island Co-Athlete of the Month for May.
Medeiros, a 6-foot-2 senior southpaw, led the Warriors to the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I title and a berth in the state D-I tournament.
For the season, Medeiros finished with a 7-1 record and a 0.97 ERA. In 43 1/3 innings, including states, he surrendered only 14 hits and 17 walks and struck out 83. He was named the BIIF’s Division I Player of the Year.
Last week, Medeiros was selected 12th overall in the Major League Baseball draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.
Taylor, a sophomore, claimed two gold medals in the state track and field championships and three in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation championships.
In the state meet on Oahu, the 5-foot-5 Taylor won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. She was the only BIIF athlete to capture two golds in the state meet.
Earlier in the BIIF finals, Taylor won gold in the 100 and 300 hurdles as well as the 100-meter dash.
The Big Island athlete of the month program is sponsored by Don’s Grill, under owner Don Hoota. The athlete of the month as well as athlete and sportsperson of the year programs were founded by the late Jack Matsui.
