Big Island students were honored for various achievements this spring. They include the following:
• Zinnia Farrell of Mountain View earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art within the College of Arts &Sciences during commencement ceremonies May 18 at the University of Vermont.
• The University of Wisconsin-Madison honored students named to the UW-M Dean’s List for the spring semester.
They include Phoenix Rice-Johnson of Pahoa, named to the College of Letters and Science Dean’s List.
• Sarah Mattos, a resident of Hilo, earned placement on the Gonzaga University Dean’s List for spring semester. Jamie Economy, also of Hilo, was named to the Gonzaga U President’s List.
• Rachel Hanalei Schwartz-Gilbert graduated Magna Cum Laude from Willamette Law School in Salem, Ore., in May. A Waiakea High School graduate, she obtained her undergraduate degree in psychology and drama from the University of California at Santa Cruz. She is employed with SAIF Corporation in Salem.
• Michael Morikawa, an athletic training major from Hilo, earned dean’s list recognition at George Fox University.
• Hawaii Preparatory Academy awarded diplomas to 108 members of the class of 2014 at commencement exercises May 23. Rika Inaba, senior class leader and Upper School Modern Language teacher, gave the commencement address. Cathryn Kimi Cantyne, student council president, received the Headmaster’s Award and Hannah Twigg-Smith was named the Senior Scholar.
During a senior awards ceremony May 22, the Founder’s Award was given to Luigi Balbo Bertone di Sambuy; Walter Liu ’65 Memorial Leadership Award to Buck Thomas; Kevin Kitagawa ’77 Memorial Bootstrap Award to Joshua Kamalani Ching; the Phyllis A. Richards Theatre Arts Award to Churchill Hanten Crean, and the Athletes of the Year awards to Alexandra Kristiana Van Pernis and Kellen Lee Gillins.
• Captain Cook resident Kai Alita Bresciani earned a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Connecticut College at the 96th commencement ceremony May 18.
