Shriners Hospitals for Children in Honolulu recently appointed Dr. Craig M. Ono as the hospital’s chief of staff.
Ono has served as acting chief of staff since December 2013. He has served as assistant chief of staff since 2006 and has been an orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital since 1992. Ono has a particular interest in lower extremity reconstruction, club feet and sports injuries.
“I am pleased that Dr. Ono has accepted our offer to become the chief of staff,” said Zeke Schmus, chairman of the hospital’s board of governors, which unanimously approved Ono’s promotion. “Under his leadership, we look to him to grow this hospital in the next decade.
“Ono plays a vital role in providing leadership, together with the hospital administrator, John White, in overseeing a team of physicians and other staff to ensure that the delivery of pediatric orthopaedic and neurodevelopmental care to patients meets our quality and safety standards, and that we continue to conduct research and train professionals to benefit future generations,” Schmus added. “Dr. Ono also serves as a colonel in the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps. He deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan three times while being part of the medical staff here in Honolulu.”
“I’m honored to be able to serve this organization as the 10th chief of staff,” said Ono. “I’ve been given an opportunity to build on a legacy that began more than 90 years ago with Dr. R. Nelson Hatt, who served as the first chief of staff, and continued by Dr. Arabella Leet, who provided key leadership over the past two years. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a very special place for me, and I’m proud to be part of a team that provides so much compassionate care to the children and families of Hawaii and the South and West Pacific Islands.”
Shriners Hospitals for Children comes to the Big Island about four times per year for outreach. The clinics are in Kona, Waimea and Hilo. Ono and his team of orthopaedic physicians screen pediatric orthopaedic patients to see which ones are eligible for care at the Honolulu hospital. They also do follow up visits with patients. Dozens of children attend these outreach visits.
Ono came to Shriners Hilo Outreach earlier this month and he is scheduled to be at the next Hilo Outreach in December.
