During the week of June 16-22, Big Island police arrested 32 motorists for DUI. Five were involved in traffic crashes and two were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 14; Kona, 7; Puna and South Kohala, 5 each; and Ka‘u, 1.
So far this year, there have been 600 DUI arrests compared to 609 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.5 percent.
There have been 737 major accidents so far this year compared to 663 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been seven official traffic fatalities compared to 18 during the same period last year, a decrease of 61.1 percent.
To date, five of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and two to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
