City Hall move may be studied
HONOLULU (AP) — A City Council measure would require studying the feasibility of moving Honolulu’s seat of government out of downtown to Kapolei.
Kapolei was developed with the idea of becoming Oahu’s so-called “second city,” but that hasn’t quite happened.
The Council Budget Committee advanced a resolution Wednesday to study moving City Hall from Honolulu Hale downtown to a spacious new building in Kapolei.
Council Chairman Ernie Martin says Honolulu Hale, which opened in 1929 on King and Punchbowl streets, is cramped, requiring city agencies to rent office space in private buildings.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell and his administration would have until Dec. 31 to complete the study.
Maui stadium turf plan nixed
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Maui County is ending its plans to replace grass at War Memorial Stadium with artificial turf because of a $1.5 million price tag.
The county originally planned to spend about $1 million on the entire project, including design work. But county spokesman Rod Antone said bids that came back in April were much higher than what the county wanted.
Maui County Councilman Don Guzman said the county received a $920,000 grant from the state for the project.
The stadium was built in the 1950s and was the former home of the Hula Bowl, a college football all-star game.
Death penalty
talks to resume
HONOLULU (AP) — Deliberations continue in the fate of a former Hawaii-based soldier facing the death penalty for his 5-year-old daughter’s murder.
The jury returned to federal court in Honolulu on Thursday morning, nearly a week after they were last together. The break in deliberations was because of a court scheduling issue.
The jurors must decide whether Naeem Williams is sentenced to death or will spend the rest of his life in prison for the 2005 beating death of his daughter, Talia.
The judge on Wednesday denied a mistrial request from defense attorneys who say the jury is taking too long to reach a decision.
They have deliberated for six full days.
The judge is also reminding jurors not to communicate with others about the case, even on social media.
