The Waiakea Lions Club will sponsor a work day today at the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island’s Hilo Club.
The island’s premier youth organization was once again selected by the Waiakea Lions Club as the recipient of its Weinberg Project supported by the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. Along with this service project, Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island will be awarded a check in the amount of $10,000 from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation to further the mission of the Waiakea Lions Club, Harry and Jeanette Weinberg and the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island.
The Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island and the Waiakea Lions Club have a long history of partnership, as far back as the 1960s when the Waiakea Lions Club helped construct the baseball fields in Hilo and installed the fencing that still stands today. Many of the members of the Waiakea Lions Club also were once members of the Boys and Girls Club and now are giving back to the club by volunteering their time and expertise.
From 9 a.m.-noon, the Waiakea Lions Club will be joined by other community volunteers painting the former pool area, building benches, working in the garden, washing windows and having fun. Volunteers 18 years and older are invited to help at the work day. The Boys and Girls Club Hilo Clubhouse is located at 100 Kamakahonu St.
