One of Waikoloa Village’s big dreams for a number years has been building a state-of-the-art library, and progress has been made the past two years with securing funding from the state Legislature to begin planning, thanks to the hard work of dozens of Waikoloa volunteers including Friends of the Library, and also the support of State Sen. Malama Solomon and Rep. Cindy Evans.

Recently, Gov. Neil Abercrombie released the funds — an essential next step — so the work is really beginning.

For those in the know, getting a project such as this “started” — the planning underway — is the proverbial “camel’s nose in the tent,” except this “camel” isn’t a bad thing.

Rather, with the planning started it’s easier to secure Capitol Improvement Project (CIP) funding for what everyone agrees is essential community infrastructure that supports literacy and a love of reading.

Residents of Waikoloa are now invited to a mini-celebration of the release of funds and to help raise a few more dollars toward the project with a dinner and “Taste of Hula” gathering from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday at the Waikoloa school cafeteria.

A $10 donation is suggested, with proceeds going to benefit the Friends of the Library — Waikoloa Region.

The gathering will begin with a teri-chicken dinner with Caesar salad, dessert and beverage and a performance by the keiki-to-kupuna dancers with the Beamer-Solomon Halau O Po‘ohala — fresh from the recent Merrie Monarch Festival.

Also included in the gathering will be a sneak peak at a new patent-pending Internet-based “app” to reduce residential electricity consumption during peak hours. This clever “app” was invented here on Hawaii Island by Ikehu Inc., and recently received a national innovation award from the U.S. Department of Energy.
