Trio to be inducted Aug. 27

The 2014 Vulcans Athletic Hall of Fame class includes former Athletic Director Bill Trumbo, tennis player Arthur Santos and softball pitcher Leo Sing Chow.

The University of Hawaii at Hilo officially announced the inductees on Monday.

This year’s induction ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27 at Nani Mau Gardens. Reservations for the $50 per person event can be made by calling HOF coordinator Joey Estrella at 895-5977. Corporate tables of eight are also available.

During her career from 2003-07, Sing Chow was a four-time all-conference, all-region and National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar/Athlete selection. During that span, the Vulcans won two Pacific West Conference championships and appeared in three NCAA Regionals.

Sing Chow currently coaches the Hilo High School softball team. She was nominated by Joey Estrella.

During his career from 1975-79, Santos was a four-year player and won the 1975 Hawaii State Collegiate Singles title.

While a student, he started and coached the Waiakea High School tennis program. Since leaving UH-Hilo, he has conducted prison and wheelchair tennis programs in Hawaii and Wisconsin.

He has also competed nationally with singles and doubles titles in the Caribbean, Middle East and Austria. He is a member of the Peter Burwash International Tennis Specialists.

Santos was nominated by Kip Koross.

From 1990-2000, Trumbo guided the athletic department through its transition from the NAIA to the NCAA. Along the way, he secured corporate sponsorships for various programs, founded and built the Vulcans Athletic Hall of Fame, created multiple top-level collegiate basketball tournaments and engineered nine Vulcans Athletic Scholarship Fund Drives.

Trumbo was nominated by Ray Fornof.
