Everyone is invited to join the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Hawaii County to hear Anne Lee, chairwoman of the county Environmental Management Commission, speak during the League’s general meeting Saturday, July 19, at the Hilo Bay Café,123 Lihiwai St. in Hilo.

The business meeting starts at 11 a.m., with greetings by president Donna Oba, introductions of members and guests, pertinent reports and update on upcoming activities. Members are invited to attend the business meeting.

Lee’s talk will start promptly at 11:30 a.m. The commission advises the Department of Environmental Management about waste reduction strategies, recycling, litter control, community involvement and other issues related to the department that might be delegated to it by ordinance (Hawaii County Chart, Article VI, Sec. 6-10.5). Its nine members are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by County Council.

A no-host luncheon at 12:15 p.m. will follow Lee’s talk. RSVP and inquire about menu selection and more info at 933-8683 or lwvhawaiictyy@gmail.com. The cost is $20 for the luncheon. A vegetarian option is included.

Membership in the LWV is open to all citizens of voting age; non-citizens and citizens not yet of voting age can be associate members. Annual dues for members are $45 per individual; dues for students and the second member in a household are $22.50.
